3D Scanning

I have enjoyed the opportunity while at University to begin to learn the processes and workflows of 3D scanning.

During my first year, I experimented with Photogrammetry while developing my project “From the Hellbox” – digitally archiving and reproducing damaged metal typefaces from the letterpress workshop.

There were concerns as to the effectiveness of the photogrammetry with such small reflective objects, but thought careful lighting and regimented scanning processes I managed to achieve a useable result.

In my final year I have been able to access more specialist scanning equipment, an Artec Ray environment scanner, a portable Artec Leo scanner, and the high-accuracy Artec Space Spider.

I have become very interested in the way that the scanners capture data, and how this could potentially be used in a creative manner. Initial experiments with the Artec ray have included trying to capture moving targets, and the effects of mirrors.
