Maker Desk

The MakerDesk came to be after researching the working practices of the Japanese anime director Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli.

Somewhat of an eccentric, Miyazaki often works on multiple projects simultaneously, changing task quickly and fluidly as he pleases. Noticing a commonality between my own practices (hectic, complicated, all over the place), the challenge was to create a tool to support this working style.

The result is a desk with multiple moving workspaces, allowing projects to be moved in and out of the primary work area quickly and easily. There is almost a ritual to the motion of the workspaces, signifying the switching of tasks as the whole desk takes on a new purpose.

This desk became the studio workspace for my final year at University, and transcended a simple workstation into becoming my creative hub, often associated with my character and an extension of my personality.
